The Perfect Temperature For A Brilliant Brew

The British have been drinking tea since the 1660s and we now guzzle more than 100 million cups every day*.

But, we still can’t agree on HOW to make the perfect brew.

At INTU we used science to settle the age old question of when you should add milk to your cuppa.

By enlisting the services of foremost food scientist Professor Alan Mackie we showed that putting it in first makes for a superior brew.

The news sparked a national conversation and even Piers Morgan waded into the debate.

While this information may be hard to swallow, we sought out expert advice because we understand how important tea is for people up and down the country. A cuppa can restore a sense of calm and normality, especially during busy days. It’s got to be done right.

Our tank system only heats up to a maximum of 98 degrees. Not only is it safer, as water at boiling temperature can spit and bounce, there’s also no risk of ruining a precious cuppa.

THE PERFECT TEMPERATURE

But, the tea-making process doesn’t end with the order in which you pour hot water and milk: The correct temperature of water is also critical to making a good brew.

Contrary to common belief, the perfect temperature for a cup of black tea is somewhere between 90 and 98 degrees, not 100 degrees*. And this drops to 80 degrees for green tea.

The perfect temperature for a cup of green tea is 80 degrees

Tea leaves are delicate and using 100-degree boiling water straight from the kettle means they are at risk of burning.

Unlike a kettle, INTU taps allow you to control the temperature of water. When making more delicate tea, like white or green tea, hot water is available at exactly 80 degrees without having to wait for it to cool.

Kieran Taylor-Bradshaw, INTU Managing Director, said: “We’re on a mission to help busy Brits save time and effort on making tea and coffee as well as cooking and cleaning.

“Putting the milk in first and ensuring water is at a perfect temperature are two simple changes people can implement to make the perfect cuppa.

“Our range of filtered water taps also make this process much simpler and quicker, as there’s no waiting around for kettles to boil.

“Now you’ve mastered how to make the best cup of tea, all you need to do now is find the perfect biscuit to complement.”
